I’ve been looking around at the things in my life and have realized that pre bankruptcy I purchased a lot of stuff I probably didn’t need then and still don’t. Actually I’ve purchased things I don’t really need after the bankruptcy as well, but I can honestly say that I rarely make frivolous purchases since I’ve become more budget conscious.
Here is a list of 5 things I’ve purchased over the years that I probably didn’t need.
1. Closets Full of Clothes and Shoes
Yes, I’ve said it before but I actually have enough clothes and shoes to choke a herd of donkies. (Or whatever a group of them is.) Why oh why does anyone need enough clothes to fill both the his and hers closets and 2 dressers and shoes that fill racks on both sides of the closet as well as a hanging shoe rack on the door? This is dumb. I do believe it’s important to feel good about ourselves and looking good helps that, but I’ve found that I can feel and look good with maybe, at the most 5 pairs of shoes and enough clothes to cover 2 weeks of casual and work attire. Since I’m an odd shape and size for a grown up woman, it’s also not realistic to pass any of this stuff on to anyone or sell it at garage sales.
2. 2007 Pontiac G6
I had a very legitimate reason for purchasing this car last year. My Ford Explorer was old and the check engine light kept flashing. Being the single mother with no clue at all about cars, I panicked and traded it for the G6, right before gas flew up to almost $4 per gallon. In that respect, I probably saved a ton on gas. I also got a really good loan on the G6 with a low interest rate and the sun roof I wanted so I can honestly say I’m still quite happy with the car. It is something that I probably did not need though. It would’ve been cheaper to find something older that I could pay for with cash. My excuse is that I don’t have the brains to maintain something like that and unfortunately could’ve possibly cost me more.
3. Laptop Computer
I bought a laptop computer last year when I have a desktop that probably still works perfectly fine. I still can’t recall why I bought the laptop except that it may have something to do with internet access and I have to be able to connect to work. I don’t remember but the desktop is in the basement not being used for anything.
4. Clothes and Shoes for My Daughter
Believe it or not, Mini-Me had almost as many clothes and shoes as I did. I guess you could say she had enough to choke a herd of baby donkies? I don’t know. The point is though, that this is even sillier and more wasteful because kids grow out of things so quickly. Not only did I buy way to much clothes and shoes for her but toys are in the same wasteful category. She has no idea what toys she has and I can honestly say that nothing has ever been played with more than once except for a handful of things. Kids have way too much these days and my daughter is proof of that.
5. Gym Membership
The only reason I mention this out of all of the probably hundreds of other useless purchases I’ve made is because I bought the membership for no particular reason except to get in shape and to say I’m going to the gym. Trust me when I say that you can do exactly the same exercises at home that you can at the gym, unless you’re just one of those people that prefers the gym atmosphere (which to me, wasn’t that great either). I have also never been overweight and actually ended up fearing that I was losing weight and stopped going. Exercise is good for you but if you don’t need the gym, a membership (to me) is a waste of money. You can actually accomplish quite a bit with one of those exercise balls.
Obviously there are more purchases I’ve made in my lifetime that I probably didn’t need. These are just 5 that I’ve thought of recently. I am learning, and hopefully getting a little smarter.
Have a great weekend everyone!

You should do the GRS closet experiment, where you put all of your clothes in one closet. Then you go to that closet to find your outfits. Afterwards, you put clothing that you have used in another closet. That way you know what you’re using.
While you may think that it’s not practical to give it away or sell it at garage sales, take the most generic items that you don’t use and try to sell it at a consignment shop or something similar. You never know until you try.
