Balloon Boy Halloween Costumes

Oddly enough, I was just talking to my mom about cheap and recyclable Halloween costumes and Balloon Boy (Girl) was one of her suggestions. Her Balloon Boy idea, though, was different from the psycho dad, Richard Heene’s Balloon Boy, so I thought I should include directions for both.

Mom’s Balloon Boy Costume

Believe it or not, a balloon boy costume can simply consist of a sheet and a bag of balloons. Using my daughter as an example, I would need to tie small balloons all over a sheet or large pillowcase, attach a couple to her shoes and put some in her hair and presto, she’s Balloon Girl. Simple and cheap and you give me a kid that won’t get a kick out of a bunch of balloons all over them and I’ll show you a…well, I don’t know. Kids love balloons though and not only the honorary Balloon Kid, but other kids will enjoy tormenting them by poking and trying to pop all of the balloons. Nobody’s going to be asking, “and what are you dressed up as?” If they do they’re blind and I apologize. We forget how simple Halloween once was.

The Other Balloon Boy

Just so you don’t feel ripped off by my mom’s Balloon Boy costume, I did research how to actually dress up as the infamous boy that flew off in a flying saucer.

Right in time for Halloween, Microflight.com is selling a Balloon Boy Halloween Costume Kit that includes a large silver mylar balloon, and what is referred to as a “gondola” but appears to be a cardboard box with a sticker that says “As Seen on CNN”. The kit is $19.99 and is as believable as the real Balloon Boy episode, but it does give a person a great idea for a cheap Halloween costume.

To make your own Balloon Boy Halloween costume, you really only need the largest shiny silver helium balloon you can find with something meant to be the base, a cardboard box being sufficient. This would actually be a great idea if you have a small child or infant that you can put in the box. Although I haven’t heard of anyone looking for the Richard Heene costume. I don’t think many adults will want to be Balloon Boy’s lunatic parents for Halloween.

Whether you choose one of these Balloon Boy ideas or not, there are tons of websites with ideas for cheap Halloween costume ideas. Remember to stick to the basic materials, look at things around the house and what they can be used for. If you’re going to make your costume or a child’s costume, then by all means dig a little deeper than covering up with a sheet and yelling boo.
