In case, for some reason you haven’t heard, Richard Heene and his wife Mayumi decided to drum up publicity for a reality show by claiming their child, Falcon, had been trapped in a runaway balloon.
Oddly, a lot of people believed it at first. I’m no liar but if I told people my daughter was flying through the air in a giant balloon, no one would believe me. I’m actually a pretty credible person, to tell you the truth, yet I can’t really think of one person I know, friend or family that would believe that story. Laugh, maybe. Maybe even tell me, “you’re so crazy,” but help me chase down the balloon? I don’t think so.
It seems that everyone wants to be a reality star. We have so many people that are famous for no reason except for being on a reality show that maybe in times like these it appears to be the only hope. Has everyone forgotten that there are better ways to make money? Whatever happened to good old blood donation when things get too hard? Even better, remember when people would get a part time job when they needed a few extra dollars? I would think that people would take a look at situations like Jon & Kate Gosselin and the Heene family and realize that sometimes, especially when kids are involved, being a reality tv star might not be worth it.
Unfortunately, in the end, the Heene’s may get what they wanted. Even if they have to go to prison for a little bit, I’m sure a handful of money making opportunities are beatin down their door. Not only will they get a reality show, but what about a book or movie covering what a dysfunctional family really looks like? Poor Falcon Heene will be Balloon Boy for the rest of his life and famous for something worse than being a reality television star. He’ll be famous for being the child of a couple of nutballs.
