5 things I almost always buy at a dollar store or discount store.
1. Laundry Detergent
Dollar stores generally carry enough laundry detergent to choke a donkey, name brand and never heard of brands as well. With products like Tide, you’ll find that you save a couple dollars but there are also brands like Purex which work just as well for almost half the price. I pretty much steer clear of the enormous sized no name brand for 2 bucks because I’m suspicious that it would cause my daughter and me to break out in a nasty rash. After all, you can’t even buy a jug of kid’s bubbles for 2 bucks.
2. Cleaning Products
I haven’t made the switch yet to green cleaning products so I still pick mine up from the dollar store. All of the name brands are available (Arm & Hammer, Mr. Clean, Pine Sol, Febreze) and they’re all a dollar or two cheaper, sometimes more. Clorox bleach is another cleaning/laundry product that I always purchase from the dollar store as well.
3. Children’s Toys
Luckily my daughter is still at dollar store age and I can grab some of her toys and gifts for other kids from the dollar store. I’ve heard that purchasing kid’s toys from the dollar store is not a good idea because of recalls and lead based products that I guess dollar stores don’t have to pay attention to. But, I did pick up a 100 piece Tinker Bell puzzle for my daughter for only a dollar and I saw one of those newborn Cabbage Patch baby dolls on sale for $9. Again, I would just be wary of toys you’ve never seen before or look like something you played with yourself as a child.
4. Paper Towels, Toilet Tissue, Paper Plates and Gift Wrap
I could’ve probably just titled number 4, “Paper Products” but that would kind of mess up my number 5. None of these products have expiration dates and all are disposable, so the brand and quality don’t generally matter. Dollar stores do carry the name brand tissues though so you can still save money and purchase the product you are used to.
5. School Supplies
Notebooks, pens, pencils, construction paper and glue are just some of the school supplies that are cheaper at the dollar store. Anything needed for school or a home office is available for cheaper than other types of discount stores and are exactly the same. Granted, you probably won’t find a great science calculator but they do have the necessities.
These are just the products I buy regularly; there are a bunch of other great dollar store deals as well. I didn’t mention packs of underwear, socks and sanitary napkins, because well, you get the picture.
