I’m writing this post from work on my lunch break (of course) because I’ve been thinking all day about some of the things I cut from my budget.
Of all of the unnecessary and frivolous things I’ve given up, I miss the morning croissants from Burger King the most. Sausage or bacon, I miss them both equally. For probably two years I’d pick one up on my way to work. I wasn’t always limited to the Burger King croissant either, I can probably tell you what every fast food joint in my area sells for breakfast and how much it’ll cost you. Plus, everyone knew me. It was like I had to say “good morning” to the friends whose names I never knew. Breakfast on the way to work was costing at the very least, $60 a month.
Along with the breakfast sandwiches, I eliminated buying lunch out as well. Again, I was in the habit of buying lunch every day and lunch choices are even spendier than breakfasts. I would say on average lunch was costing me around $140.00 a month.
As an alternative, I now keep a loaf of bread and a package of lunchmeat in the work refrigerator. Remembering to fix something to bring in rarely works for me and having something here saved me from using the excuse, “I forgot my lunch, I’ll have to go buy something.” I also filled up my empty water bottles with milk and kept cereal here for a while for breakfast.
The good news though, is that a lot of the things I’ve cut out of my budget have actually been physically healthier for me (not just fiscally). My cholesterol has dropped and I think it has to do with not eating fast food everyday. For some reason, things are easier to give up when I realize it benefits my health. I’m happy about the money I’ve saved, but if it means I’ll be around longer, that’s even better.
So yeah, I do have fond memories of Burger King Croissanwiches. I also miss the fancy lunch salads and deli soups and sandwiches, and tiny lunch pizzas especially when I’m sitting here eating plain turkey on wheat bread or tuna from the can. But, I’m sure there’s something better I can do with the $200 I save and not clogging up my arteries is priceless.
By the way, I have a slammin recipe for a quick and super easy chicken salad I’ll post later.
