I took vacation days for yesterday and today since my daughter is camping with my parents. I figured I’d get a lot of stuff done that I usually don’t have time for and of course try to enjoy a much needed break.
Well, I got to thinking about my vacation days. I am privileged enough to work for a firm that allows me 2 weeks vacation every year, yet I’ve never actually taken a vacation. Usually I end up using them up at the end of the year (around Christmas time) and spend the time sitting around the house because it’s too cold and shopper-crazy out to do anything.
Plus, I’m always too broke to do anything significant.
Despite the financial setbacks I’ve had this year, I’ve decided that my #1 personal financial goal will be to take a real vacation somewhere, this time next year. I’d like to have enough paid off and enough saved that I can take my daughter somewhere for maybe a complete week and just do nothing but have fun. I’m thinking somewhere with a beach or at the very least somewhere out of state.
Anyone that works hard deserves to take a real vacation. It’s those special moments that actually make working hard worth it. Most of all, my daughter deserves it and shouldn’t have to miss out on stuff just because her mother is broke.
So, by summer 2010 I plan on having things in order enough to do this. Hell, even if I don’t, I might just do it anyway. It’ll take a lot of work and discipline, but it’s nice to have a goal besides just paying something off and I’m looking forward to it.

I hope your goal is written down and you see it everyday, and have asked your daughter for input and to get onboard for your vacation plan.
have you made your plan comprehensive:
What beach?
Distance? Car gets X/miles to the gallon and I will need $ for gas.
Accomadations? Camping, low budget hotel @ $/night
I need to save $/month to go.
Best wishes
Brian
