My daughter asked me what Labor Day is, and since she’s only 5 I explained the best way possible. It’s a holiday to celebrate the American work force, the people that work…laborers.
Of course, she didn’t understand any of that. Just that Mommy has the day off and she starts school tomorrow.
And in the spirit of Labor Day, I’ve done absolutely nothing the entire weekend except hang around the house and work. We didn’t go anywhere except to grab a few miscellaneous items for school and laundry. Otherwise, I’ve been online writing and trying to make up the $200 my car cost for rear brakes, a blinker bulb and a tire that had a nail in it (and tire rotation).
No great celebration or parade here. I have realized though, that I have quite a bit to celebrate, being that on this particular Labor Day, there are 15 million people unemployed.
Do I love my job as a legal assistant? No. As far as jobs and firms go though I should count my lucky stars that I have a fulltime job. Although I enjoy my freelance writing gigs more, I do engage in my fair share of whining about working even more when I get home from work. 15 million unemployed to me, means 15 million people with absolutely no work. No job. No income. Here I am with 2 pretty nice jobs (not counting Mommy and Homemaker) and it’s not the best of times for me, but I do have a good idea where my next paychecks are coming from.
So, on this Labor Day I’m not only celebrating the American workforce, but I’m celebrating that I have jobs that feed myself and my daughter. I’m also thankful that it’s tough, but I have opportunities that not everyone has. Most of all, I’m hoping for everyone in that 15 million that’s unemployed, that something will come up. Maybe not your dream job (as very few are) but something to take you off that list and make your next Labor Day a little better.
